Five years ago, the official census said that there were over 5.5 million indigenous in Mexico. The last census revealed over 10 million, some say as high as 11.5 million. The reason isn't population growth, but a change in the government's official recognition procedures for indigenous peoples. Originally, if they spoke Spanish, they weren't considered to be indigenous, regardless if they spoke their tribal language or not. Today they are considered indigenous by the different agencies and institutions, even if they don't speak a traditional language but are pure blood indigenous descendant. |
