by Brandi Martindale Illustrations by Ray Braun Last week: One day, after living in Thailand for 18 years, God led Avis to volunteer at an orphanage....... How can I help, Lord? ....in Bangkok. Avis remembers when she first went to the orphanage there was a mat on the floor with eight kids who were very sick lying on it. God showed Avis instantly that these kids needed love. These very sick kids were put in a separate building at the orphanage and were barely touched because the other doctors and workers didn't wanted to catch their diseases. God told her that these kids were not dying from their diseases but from not being loved. Avis then prayed that God would let her adopt one of the kids and then she would open a home for the rest of them. Now What? Avis was drawn to the baby girl that no one would touch. She wanted to bring her home but there were two problems: foreigners were not allowed to adopt Thai children and this girl was too sick to adopt. Avis and Roy trusted in God to make a way. And He did! Say Cheese! The head lady at the orphanage who knew Avis told her to take the girl home and take a picture of her with the Rideout family. Then, she would send it to the committee and tell them about Avis and what she wanted to do. So, the Rideout’s brought the baby home and took the picture but never had to bring her back to the orphanage. And Nikki has been with them ever since. A Miracle for Nikki It was good that Nikki finally had a home and a family but she was still very sick. Avis couldn’t give her any medicine or take her to the doctor. But she held her, loved her, drank out of her cup and even slept in her bed. One day, Avis and Nikki were sitting in a church and the man that was preaching kept looking at them. He said he saw something like an angel of death over Nikki’s head. He would say in the name of Jesus, don’t. And it would go. Afterward, Avis took Nikki up front for prayer.
